Issue No. 47/2017 19 November 2017 GOD, THE CENTER OF WORSHIP PT. 3 Owen D. Olbricht (Truth for Today) WORSHIPING GOD FOR WHO HE IS Certain qualities of God’s nature are important for us to understand when we seek to worship Him. If we understand His character, we will be awed by His nature and greatness. For this reason, we will want to worship Him. 1. He is a spirit (John 4:23, 24) and without physical substance. He is invisible to the human eye (Col. 1:15; 1 Tim. 6:16). In our worship of God, we should not try to envision Him as having physical substance. In a spiritual sense, we see the unseeable. We can spiritually realize God’s presence even though we cannot touch Him, see Him, or hear Him. Practically speaking, we can see Him in the things He has made (Rom. 1:20) and understand His ongoing movements in His created universe and in the affairs of man. 2. He is the Creator and has eternal power (Rom. 1:20) above all existing beings. He is God over all (Eph. 4:6). Such power is awesome. Consider the vastness of the universe and the energy within it. In comparison to God, His creation is impotent and is therefore dependent on Him. In beholding God’s creation, we can begin to realize His greatness. We cannot compete with God, because our strength is nothing when compared to that of the great Being who made everything (1 Cor. 1:25b). Because of His greatness, He deserves our greatest respect—above everything else we have and know. We are to worship and serve Him as our Creator, rather than worshiping the creation (Rom. 1:25). 3. He has superior intelligence, which is revealed in His creation. Paul made this comparison: “…the foolishness of God is wiser than men” (1 Cor. 1:25a). In most societies those with superior intellect are highly respected. God is to be admired for His infinite wisdom and knowledge, which is far above that of all mankind put together. 4. He is all-knowing. David expressed this characteristic of God by writing that God fully knows us. He always knows our thoughts, wherever we are (Psa. 139:1-12). We can be assured that He is aware of our weakest efforts to worship Him. Nothing escapes His notice (Heb. 4:13). People sometimes ignore us, even when we are seeking to praise them. Worship of God is not in vain. He not only sees and hears our physical activities, but also knows and understands what is in the heart of each worshiper. 5. He is omnipresent. “ ‘Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the Lord” (Jer. 23:24). This trait indicates that we can worship God anywhere, whether we are alone or with a large or a small assembly. “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst” (Matt. 18:20). Since God is a spirit, it is possible for His presence to be everywhere at one time. He is all-knowing because of this attribute. He is present with us each minute of our lives, as well as when we worship. 6. He is love, holiness, goodness, righteousness, kindness, and graciousness. Every great personal quality can be used to describe His character. He loves righteousness and hates lawlessness (Heb. 1:9). His traits are worthy of our admiration. We can depend on God and expect good things from Him (Jas. 1:17). As He was, He will always be; for He is unchanging in His nature (Mal. 3:6). His goodness and lovingkindness are expressed toward us, even though we do not deserve them. These blessings should motivate us to express our thanks in worship to Him. Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the Lord is good. His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations (Psa. 100:4, 5; see also 106:1; 107:1; 118:1, 29). 7. He is a God of anger, hatred, abhorrence, displeasure, and fury. Because He is totally holy, all that is unholy is abhorrent to Him. He loves what is good and hates what is evil (Heb. 1:9). He will accept neither the wicked nor their worship. Because not everything we might use in worship is pleasing to God, we should take care that our worship conforms to His will, both in form and in substance. He possesses every admirable quality, virtue, and trait. There is no other beside Him or like Him (Isa. 46:9). He is the holiest of the holy, greatest of the great, and most magnificent of the magnificent. He is over all and in all (Eph. 4:6). If we get to know God, we will be impressed, awestruck, and astounded at His greatness. The more we get to know God, the more likely we are to be filled with worship, wonder, and adoration of Him. *************************************************************************************** K.
